"WE ARE THE GUINNESS NOW": Otherside Breaks The World Record For Most Players In An Online Shooter As 2,197 Gamers Ape In! Here's What's Next For The Metaverse!

Writer's picture: KyleKyle

The Yugaverse “is the Guinness now” after 2,197 Apes, Meebs, Kodas, Moonbirds, Voyagers, and gamers from across the Web3 world and beyond aped into the swamp for this afternoon’s record-breaking episode of Project Dragon!

History was made in the metaverse on Saturday after thousands of community members from across the Yugaverse—and friends outside the ecosystem—locked in, picked up their rifles, pew-pewwed their fellow degens, and broke the Guinness World Record for the most players in an online first-person shooter!

“We did it,” the Bored Ape Yacht Club’s mascot Curtis shouted after a record breaking first round of Project Dragon this afternoon. “we did it. We set the world record. Unbelievable. 2,000+ people. Yes, yes. Everybody twerk. We just set the world record! We’re twerking on Guinness right now. Oh they hate to see it. The Guinness man is enraged. I don’t know why he’s so upset. In your face longest tongue lady. How does that taste? We set the record now, set the record straight. The Guinness man is holding a fragile record made of glass and I just took it out of his hand and smashed it. He’s crying! He’s crying salty tears. We did it! They said it couldn’t be done. But you know what we said? It can, and we did! Wow, I have so many people to thank. I want to thank everybody here. I want to thank the concept of video games. I want to thank clouds. I want to thank these gator hats…Wow look at these leaderboards right here….I also want to thank my good friends.. All right we’re going to do a celebration next round. Everyone fire your guns into the sky and dance because it just feels right! Because we broke the world record and no one can take that away from us! We are the Guinness now. We’re in charge. Apes in charge."

After today’s five matches, which ran incredibly smoothly considering the number of people who aped in and the fact almost everyone was playing through a web browser, Yuga Labs CEO Garga took to the timeline to thank Apes, the broader Web3 world, and ImprobableIO, who is working with Yuga to make the Otherside a reality, for making today possible!

“THANK YOU to everyone who showed up to help us crush this world record by ~700 users and THANK YOU to our partners on Otherside over at @MSquared_io,” Garga tweeted. “been over 4 years since we started Yuga lotta firsts since then, today was a fun one going to keep trying to do things in crypto that haven't been done here or anywhere else.”

Today’s Project Dragon event was one for the record books, and Yuga Labs has many more firsts for Otherside planned for later this year.

As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, the first iteration of Yuga Labs’ persistent, always-on Otherside complete with a usable Otherside Development Kit (ODK), AI integrations, and more is coming this June!

“Focus right now is on driving access and utility for Otherdeeds more broadly, Garga explained when fielding a question about Otherside resources and artifacts back in January 2025. “We need that to make sure we have a strong base, and get us set up for persistent Otherside, which we plan for ~June of this year. Persistent Otherside does NOT mean we are done, it's just a super important milestone. It means always-on world, strong ODK to allow Unreal-capable builders to create awesome shit (and have access to all the Otherside biomes to do that), and some ODK experiences that we're proud of that show the capabilities of the platform. And that include some stuff we're really excited about on the AI front. It also means the several key islands (Nexus, Swamp, Meetropolis to start) are up 24/7, which we expect people to congregate. Once we're persistent and have the ODK in strong shape, then the next part of the roadmap revolves around our plans for resources and artifacts.”

The Bored Ape Gazette is working to bring you continued coverage of today’s record-breaking Project Dragon event. Stay tuned for updates!
