SMILING IN THE SWAMP: The GRILLZ NFT Collection Had Everyone Chattering With Its Otherside Debut!

As Kodas made their highly anticipated debut on the Otherside during last weekend’s Project Dragon event, another NFT collection, GRILLZ, made history as the first non-Yugaverse collection to interoperably ape into the metaverse, grinning ear to ear all the way!

On Saturday, Yuga Labs’ Apes, Meebs, Voyagers, Kodas, and more took to the swamps of Otherside for another action-packed episode of Project Dragon.

During the event, Apes  used their Bored Ape avatars, Mutants played as the mutated Curtis, aka Murtis, and Kodas explored the metaverse as their mystical forms for the first time. Meanwhile, everyone else joined as voyager robots—except for GRILLZ holders, who stood out as animated sets of shiny teeth that had everyone chattering!

“It’s great finally see interoperability come to life in a big way,” Directive Creator of ImprobableIo and Founder of the GRILLZ told the Directive Creator told the Gazette. “Being able to see Grillz walk around and people talking about it in the metaverse always makes me smile ear to ear.”

The GRILLZ making their way to the Otherside is a groundbreaking moment. It marks the first time a non-Yuga Labs NFT collection has joined the swamps, proving that the interoperable metaverse Yuga Labs is building with ImprobableIo is real—and that other projects are invited to ape in!

“Interoperability in the Otherside sets the example and show the way forward for a lot of metaverses in the future,” Directive creator said.

As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, Otherside is built atop ImprobableIo’s Metaverse Markup Language (MML) tech. This technology allows any project following its guidelines to integrate characters into the Otherside and other metaverses, such as Major League Baseball’s Virtual Ballpark, which Apes visited in September 2024.

“It’s essentially like an ecosystem that lets everybody profit,” Narula said of his company’s MML and M2 tech during a metaverse meetup event back in June 2023. “So, you can make a world like Sandbox and Decentraland, you can connect one in, you can create MML objects, and you can have them move from world to world. You can create and use experiences that have thousands of people in them at the same time. And none of these are going to be decisions that are only made my Improbable. So M2 stands apart from us and is kind of like an underlying telecoms network for the metaverse. And there will be economic incentives that will incentivize all of the large metaverses we are working with to create more interoperability.”

The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to cover all things Otherside, GRILLZ, and interoperability as more collections and creators join the expanding Yugaverse. Stay tuned for updates!
