SHADOWS IN THE SWAMP: Yuga Labs' 0xQuit Explains The Need For, And Tech Behind, Shadows That Will Bring NFTs Cross-Chain!

It’s a new dawn around the swamp as Yuga Labs’ Vice President of Blockchain, 0xQuit, announced that the company’s Shadows tech is starting to creep onto the blockchain and will soon be stretching from Ethereum mainnet to ApeChain and beyond!

On Thursday, the Web3 world got an update on Yuga Labs’ highly anticipated Shadows technology, which will make it possible for NFTs based on Ethereum mainnet to be recognized on Layer 2s like ApeChain, Abstract, and beyond. This innovation will give creators and developers the chance to reward holders, bring the Web3 world together, and open up new possibilities across chains!

In his 24-part thread, 0xQuit explained that the NFT space needs Shadows because the ecosystem has spread out from Ethereum mainnet to L2s and L3s over the years.

“As our space has grown, communities have become more fragmented,” he tweeted. “Projects that want to offer benefits to NFT communities are often launching on L2s or L3s, which can't access the L1 state. Teams are forced to come up with complex mechanisms to facilitate claims. our NFTs should be global. It should be simple for folks to reward any collection anywhere This is why we created NFT Shadows.”

From there, 0xQuit dove into the tech behind Shadows and explained that he had been working to address this problem for years. Then, in 2024, Layer Zero announced lzRead, which lets developers access any data, across any chains, at any point in time, which was just what he needed to make Shadows a reality.

“What does it mean to have your assets anywhere,” 0xQuit wrote in his thread. “Projects can reward NFT communities completely onchain, regardless of what chain they launch on. New project founders don't have to fuss about which chain they launch on - they can be on all of them. And as a user, your UX improves as well. You can easily move your asset across chains, to any chain where Shadows are supported. This enables trading, NFTFi, and any other use cases that require full ERC721 functionality.”

At this time, 0xQuit and Yuga Labs are doing a soft rollout of Shadows and will publicly deploy the tech when everything is ready for community members and builders to ape in!

The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow Shadows and will let you know when 0xQuit and Yuga Labs officially launch it. Stay tuned for updates!
