Digital art has found a home in the City of Angels, with the 115-year-old Los Angeles County Museum of Art announcing its first-ever Digital Leaders board, featuring some familiar faces from around the swamp, to advise the institution on online creations!

On Wednesday, LACMA’s Jehan Chu and Jeannie Vu took to the timeline to announce that the museum would be embracing digital art with the help of leaders like Yuga Labs Chief Creative Officer Michael Figge, notable CryptoPunk collector and artist BeautyAndPunk, Sandbox Co-Founder Sebastien Borget, and Beeple!

“The formation of this group is a powerful signal that LACMA, one of the most exciting museums in the US, under the leadership of Michael Govan, continues to engage with the historical importance of digital art and respond critically and constructively to onchain art as a medium,” Chu tweeted in a six part thread. “Showcasing art histories from new and unexpected points of view is paramount and LACMA’s Digital Witness exhibition is the first to be supported by LDL. Collecting art is a journey of passion and stewardship. Learning from professionals and veterans from traditional and digital art and assembling generational collections of digital art is the mission of each of LDL’s members.”

"Stoked to be one of the founding members of @LACMA's Digital Leaders,” Figge tweeted after the announcement. “The formation of this group is a powerful signal that LACMA continues to engage with the historical importance of digital art. Big step in growing institutional awareness.”

Growing institutional awareness and getting Apes and CryptoPunks placed in museums around the globe has been a project for Yuga Labs in recent years.

As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, Apes made their debut in the Louvre back in March 2023.

Yuga Labs has also placed CryptoPunks in museums like the Toledo Museum, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami as part of the company’s Punks Legacy Program, which aims to donate and place Punks in contemporary art museums around the world.

The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow the LACMA Digital Leaders and will keep you posted on when and where Apes and CryptoPunks pop up in the modern art world! Stay tuned for updates!
